Electrical wiring is a potential source of fire by releasing toxic gases and reaching high temperatures.

The importance of cable management systems for fire prevention during the summer

High summer temperatures mark a critical period in firefighting. During these months, the risk increases significantly due to factors such as heat waves and the intensive use of electrical systems for cooling and other purposes.

According to the Spanish Union of Insurance and Reinsurance Entities (UNESPA), firefighters extinguish a fire every three and a half minutes during the hottest months. Most of these fires, 71 %, occur in homes. In comparison, 10 % affect businesses, shops and premises, and 5 % correspond to industries.

In this context, electrical wiring is a potential source of fire by releasing toxic gases and reaching high temperatures. Our cable support systems are therefore an essential tool to protect us from these hazards for several reasons:

1. Non-flammable materials:

Our products are manufactured from high quality non-flammable materials such as galvanised steel, stainless steel and aluminium, which not only offer durability but also high resistance to the spread of fire. These materials are able to withstand extreme temperatures without deforming or losing their mechanical properties, ensuring that the cables inside remain protected.

2. Fire resistant coatings

In addition to the base materials, our products are coated with fire resistant materials. These coatings act as an additional barrier, slowing the spread of fire and preventing high temperatures from damaging the cables. Commonly, intumescent coatings are used which, when exposed to heat, expand and form an insulating layer that protects the underlying metal.

3. Ventilation design

Our designs include features that improve ventilation, which is essential to dissipate the heat generated by the electrical current and any potential ignition sources. This reduces the internal temperature of the trays and minimises the risk of fire.

4. Organisation and separation of cables

A well-designed cable tray system allows for the organisation and separation of cables, which is essential for fire safety. Proper cable separation prevents heat build-up and the possibility of short circuits, which are common causes of fires in electrical systems. It also facilitates regular inspection and maintenance, allowing early detection of potential hazards.

5. Regulations and certifications

Our products also comply with strict safety regulations and certifications, which are regulated by recognised international standards. These include the standards set by the German Institute for Standardisation (DIN), one of the most important in the field of fire safety.

The DIN 4102-12 standard, in particular, refers to the fire behaviour of building elements and materials, including cable support systems. This standard assesses the fire resistance of the entire electrical cable system, ensuring the integrity of the circuit even under extreme conditions. The systems are classified into four categories: non-combustibility, flammability, normal flammability and easily flammable.

To determine the suitability of a cable tray system, it is subjected to rigorous testing in an oven at least 3 metres long, at temperatures of up to 1,000 °C, for a period of 30 to 90 minutes. The result of these tests is reflected in a quality seal. On this stamp, the 'E' stands for 'circuit integrity', and the number '30-90' indicates the duration in minutes during which circuit integrity was maintained.

For these reasons, the implementation of a fire resistant cable tray system is an essential investment for any facility that prioritises safety and efficiency. This not only limits the spread of fire and reduces damage, but also ensures compliance with safety regulations. If you have any questions or need expert advice, please do not hesitate to contact us.
